Animal Response in the News

TLAER Facebook Page

Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER TM) discusses the practical, technical considerations behind the specialty heavy rescue and safe extrication of live large animals in local emergencies (trailer overturns, mud, ice, barn fires, etc.) and disaster areas, while teaching people how to do it safely without injury of the animal or themselves. It focuses on behavior and how it affects human attempts to extricate large animals.

The group's FB page often posts information about large animal incidents in the  news.

Mission
In the event of a catastrophic disaster, whether natural and/or man-made, in Oklahoma and the surrounding areas, we seek to assist in a public/private partnership that bridges the gap between federal, state and local agencies and private citizens by forming a comprehensive team capable of providing urgent care, triage, evacuation and other support for large animal victims and their owners. OLAFR will also assist in organizing assistance in the long term recovery such as feed and supplies through donations and volunteers. Through education and training we will work with the communities and owners to help them be more prepared for disasters.

  • OKLAHOMA CITY — One organization is known in the state for medical responses, but continues to expand and deploy its large animal response team to disasters.
“Animals in our culture play such a crucial role, everybody knows that, whether we are talking about small animals that are a part of our family or big animals,” said Clayton McCook, vice president of the Oklahoma Large Animal Response Team.
  •                In May, the organization, a division of the Oklahoma Medical Response Corps, responded to tornado damage in Elk City. The team took two horses back for care and helped with medical response teams already on the ground.
More than 575 volunteers are on the State Animal Response Teams, including 68 veterinarians and 40 veterinarian techs.

Louisiana State University

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Disaster Training and Response Program provides training and emercency response efforts. On the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a training boot camp involving experts from around the country took place.

From Medicine Hat Firefighters FB page:
Fire fighters were called this morning to a Clydesdale horse that had fallen through the floor of it's trailer while being transported. Firefighters used lifting bags, cribbing, and shoring equipment to lift and stabilize the trailer to allow the horse to stand up on its own, and give room for all four horses to exit the trailer.
