Oklahoma Tornadoes and Floods - May 2019If you are in Oklahoma you already know what our communities and their residents and animals experienced in May 2019.
If you are in Stillwater, where our team is based, you know that this was an historic flood in this area. The video linked below is a summary of aerial footage across Stillwater from the May 20-21 storms by Oklahoma State University's Unmanned Research Center: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UnmannedResearch/videos/693927397704653/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv4C5qZkyPM During the emergency we provided advice to residents who had to evacuate their homes without their pets and also provided equipment to Stillwater Fire Dept from our AKC Reunite Disaster Response trailer. Some of our volunteers traveled to Tulsa to assist at the shelter there, and we also fielded calls about horses and cattle in distress which we referred to the State Animal Response Team. OK-SART dispatched the American Humane and Oklahoma Large Animal First Responders teams who were joined by rescue specialists from Code 3 Associates from Kansas. What a mess! In May we began fundraising for Flood and Slackwater Rescue Training for our volunteers and for several sets of appropriate personal protective equipment necessary for flood and slackwater rescue. This would PCART to assist the fire department in the future and to deploy to other areas. Although we would not be considered a technical rescue team we would be qualified to ride along with American Humane and other teams to help them to either bring animals out to care for in our emergency shelter, or shelter them in place. We are happy to announce that we received a grant from The Kirkpatrick Foundation and have scheduled a training with Code 3 Associates for June 2020! We also raised additional funds from our Facebook page and a donation from the OSU-CVHS Class of 2019, however in order to provide training at a minimal cost to 20 to 40 volunteers and first responders we are still in need of additional sponsors! We currently have an AKC Reunite Disaster Animal Response Unit as well as FEMA credentialed volunteers and can set up an emergency an emergency shelter for over 70 small animals, however with additional water rescue equipment and training we could easily integrate into rescue activities to make sure that not only our citizens but also their beloved animals are either rescued or safely sheltered in place, fed, and provided with veterinary care when needed. |
In January 2018 we acquired our very own AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer for Payne County which is equipped with the equipment needed to set up a completely operational pop up shelter for up to 68 pets should the need arise. This trailer will help PCART to be more prepared and ready to respond to disasters in Payne County, across OK, and even across the country should the need arise. Additional supplies and equipment, plus funds for training, are always needeD so please donate to PCART if you are able! Thank you!

The AKC Reunite Trailer is only part of the response picture for PayneCART. There is additional equipment to be purchased, and more advanced training available for team members.
Being prepared, trained and credentialed is the first step to mitigating (reducing) the number of lives that are negatively affected during disasters. Please, help us help others to be prepared. We still need equipment that is not included in the trailer and will have fuel and maintenance expenses.
