september is national preparedness month:
Are you prepared?
An important message from the Oklahoma Large Animal First Responders
and the Payne County Animal Response Team:
and the Payne County Animal Response Team:
Being able to identify one's animals is an important part of the reunification process after an emergency separates you from your animal!
Various methods are often promoted for equines prior to a potential disaster - braiding one's contact information into the mane or tail; spray painting a phone number on its side; writing the phone number on a hoof in indelible marker or nail varnish. While some may prove beneficial, none are permanent forms of identification, all can be eradicated, and - importantly - none will be usable as an ID in an official request for return of the animal to the owner.
Following Hurricane Katrina, 463 of 464 displaced horses were reunited with their owners because Louisiana required permanent IDs in order to issue a Coggin's Certificate - and these including microchips!
OLAFR is once again providing a low-cost microchip clinic, this time at OSU’s Boren Veterinary Hospital Large Animal Parking Area, hosted by the Payne County Animal Response Team, on September 21st, 2019. Cost for the microchip, placement of the chip and lifetime registration - everything one needs - is $30. More details will be provided on a flyer soon.
In order to expedite the process, we'd ask that you fill out and print off our form to be obtained from http://www.olafr.org/microchip. This is a two-page form, but we'd ask you if possible to print in on a single sheet, front and reverse!
We have an "FAQ" about the microchipping process available on our FB page at: https://www.facebook.com/OklahomaLargeAnimalFirstResponders/posts/1520114908132814 - but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by PM or ask in the survey above.
Similarly, please contact us if you would like to have us run a microchip clinic at your facility (we typically require a minimum of 10 animals in Central Oklahoma) - and please be sure to share this post so as many people as possible can "Be Prepared"!!
